“For many women their genital appearance is a source of anxiety and I was in a unique position to do something about that.”
It is not erotic art, but rather nonsexual, conceptual, thus allowing to stare without shame but in wonder and amazement at this exposé of human variety. The 400 women, whose privates have gone public, prove that vulvas and labia are as different as faces and that there is no such thing as the ‘perfect’ vagina. The Great Wall of Vagina offers a fascinating and revealing view, shameless grabbing the attention, to show what normal women really look like.
McCartney hopes his sculpture will help to combat the frightening rise of cosmetic labial surgeries by showing how different women are, yet always beautiful.
“It’s time our society grew up around these issues and I’m certain that art has a role to play.”
The Great Wall of Vagina comes with a dedicated webpage where you can get images, mini panels and even a deluxe plaster cast to create your own Great Wall of Vagina.
